There was much to spy on Saturday night in Brooklyn, where block after snow-covered block echoed with uproarious laughter, clanking glasses, and holiday music. And then the parties spilled out onto the street as more than 900 folks left the warmth of the home hearth for the bustle of the Heights Casino… for late-night dancing and dessert. To the veteran observer of Brooklyn society, it could mean only one thing: The Yuletide Ball had arrived - with more diversity, more style, and more youth than ever before.”
- Amanda Gordon, The New York Sun
The Yuletide Ball is the cornerstone of the Holiday calendar in Brownstone-Brooklyn, continuing its important work raising money to fund early childhood education in underprivileged areas of New York City. Yuletide was originally established in 1920, and from the mid-1940's to late 1960's served as Brooklyn's major debutante ball. In its modern incarnation the Yuletide Ball provides Brooklyn Kindergarten Society (BKS) with critical funding for five early childhood learning centers located in New York City Housing Authority apartment complexes in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights and Brownsville. BKS serves 350 children and their families in full-day programs throughout the year. In addition to providing essential operating and management support for the centers, the proceeds from the Ball enable BKS to offer enrichment activities in all five centers. These include pre-literacy and language development programs, arts instruction, and support for social service staff who provide counseling, referral services and workshops for children, parents and staff.
Yuletide sets itself apart from many other black tie benefits with its unique format which enables it to pass on almost 100% of the ticket price to BKS programs and operations. Guests of the Ball attend dinner parties hosted in the Brownstone-Brooklyn homes of the over forty women who volunteer on the Yuletide Committee or as Friends of Yuletide. The dinner parties provide a unique and intimate opportunity for the almost 700 guests of Yuletide to get to know one another, before heading to the Heights Casino for dessert and dancing beginning at 10pm. Though the format of the dinners vary greatly - from more bohemian pot-luck, to traditional black tie catered affairs, they have one thing in common - by hosting the dinner themselves, the hostesses help to significantly defray the costs of the Ball, allowing for almost 100% of the proceeds of each ticket to be passed on directly to the operations of the BKS.
Tickets are available at the following levels: Sponsor at $225, Benefactor at $300, Angel at $600. Junior level tickets are available for guests under 35 years old at $150 each.
